Regulators Target Sustainability in TPD Insurance Products

ASIC and APRA Collaborate to Enhance TPD Insurance Practices

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) and the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) are intensifying efforts to address sustainability issues within Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) insurance products.
During a recent roundtable discussion, both regulators emphasized the need for life insurers to manage challenges arising from TPD offerings across retail and group insurance channels.

TPD insurance provides financial support to individuals who are unable to work due to a permanent disability. However, the sector has faced concerns regarding claim definitions, assessment processes, and the overall sustainability of these products. ASIC and APRA are urging insurers to refine their TPD products to ensure they remain viable and continue to meet policyholders' needs effectively.

For personal trainers, this regulatory focus is particularly relevant. The physically demanding nature of their profession increases the importance of having robust TPD coverage. As insurers adjust their TPD offerings in response to regulatory guidance, personal trainers should review their policies to ensure they provide adequate protection. Engaging with insurance providers to understand any changes and how they impact coverage is crucial in maintaining comprehensive protection against potential career-ending injuries.

Staying informed about regulatory developments and their implications on insurance products will enable personal trainers to make informed decisions about their coverage. Proactive engagement with insurers and financial advisors can help in navigating these changes and securing policies that offer the necessary support in case of permanent disability.

I hadn’t really thought about TPD sitting alongside the usual liability cover, but the bit about claim definitions and assessment processes changing is a good reminder to actually read the fine print, not just renew and forget it.

Fresh industry attention on the Australian Financial Complaints Authority’s latest complaints data is a useful prompt for personal trainers, fitness instructors and small studio owners to think beyond simply having a policy in place.
